Twinread puts the English under each paragraph.

Read any web page in two languages, paragraph by paragraph. Translation happens on your computer, so the text you read is never sent to a server.

Salimos de casa de madrugada para llegar al pueblo antes de que apretara el calor.

We left home in the early hours to reach the village before the heat set in.

La sobremesa duró más que la comida, y nadie quería levantarse.

The conversation after lunch lasted longer than the meal, and nobody wanted to get up.

For Google Chrome 138 or later or Microsoft Edge 148 or later, on desktop. No account, no API key.

Both languages, or just the translation

Translate the page once, then change the view whenever you like. Nothing is translated again.

A Spanish article, read with the English under each paragraph.
  • Bilingual view: the translation under each paragraph, the original left as it was
  • Translation only: the translation in place of the original
  • Show original brings the page back untouched with one click
  • Links in the original stay clickable
  • Code, forms, editable areas, hidden text and one-word menu labels are left alone. Text already in your language is skipped

One sentence, one paragraph, or the whole page

You do not have to translate everything to read one line.

  • Select text on any page and a small card shows the translation, with a copy button
  • Alt+Shift+S translates the selection from the keyboard
  • Hold Alt over a paragraph to translate only that paragraph
  • Alt+A translates the whole page. Visible paragraphs come first, and text that loads as you scroll is picked up

Video subtitles in two languages

The caption line the video shows, with its translation under it, over the video. Where the site provides no captions, there is nothing to translate.

  • Works with captions the site provides: plain HTML5 video, and YouTube with captions switched on (the CC button)
  • Follows the video into fullscreen. You set the text size, and a chip on the player turns it on and off
  • The translation comes from the browser's on-device translator, like everything else. Twinread does not listen to audio
  • Free has no daily limit and translates the first 10 minutes of each video. Pro translates the whole videoPro

A PDF reader with the translation beside it

Open the reader from the popup, choose a PDF or drop it on the page, and read it paragraph by paragraph. It reads PDFs that contain text. There is no OCR, so a scan that is only pictures of text has nothing to read.

  • Each paragraph with its translation beside it, or under it on a narrow window
  • Two-column pages are read left column first. Running headers, footers and page numbers are left out
  • A paragraph is translated when you scroll to it
  • A PDF you choose is read and translated on your computer. On a tab that shows a PDF, a button opens it in the reader when the site allows the download; otherwise save the file and drop it on the reader
  • Free reads the whole document. A paid pass saves it as a bilingual HTML pagePro

Keep the phrases you look up

For reading in a language you are learning. A kept phrase stays with its sentence, ready for review.

  • Keep a word or phrase from the selection card, with the sentence it came from and its translation
  • A Kept phrases page to search, filter by language pair, edit and delete
  • Open at source: the page at the phrase's sentence, or the video at its second
  • Free keeps 200 kept phrases; Pro has no limit
  • Kept phrases are marked in yellow on every page you read, with the translation on hover
  • Export to Anki or CSV, with the sentence on the cardPro

Your browser translates it, on your computer

Twinread has no translation server. It hands the text to the translator built into Chrome or Edge and puts the result back on the page.

  • No account and no API key
  • The browser downloads a small language model once for each language pair. After that, translation works without a connection
  • Works in Google Chrome 138 or later and Microsoft Edge 148 or later, on desktop. On first use the browser fetches its translation engine, about 20 seconds
  • At install it has no access to any website. It gets access to the tab you use it on, and asks for one site at a time if you switch on Always translate

Questions

How do I translate a web page and read it in two languages?
Install Twinread, open an https page, pick the two languages in the toolbar popup and press Translate this page, or press Alt+A. The translation appears under each original paragraph, and the bar at the bottom switches between Bilingual and Translation only.
Which browsers does it work in?
Google Chrome 138 or later or Microsoft Edge 148 or later, on desktop. On first use the browser fetches its translation engine, which takes about 20 seconds.
Does the text I translate leave my computer?
No. The page text goes to the browser's on-device translator and back. Only your licence key leaves your browser, when a Pro pass is activated or re-checked. Details in the privacy policy.
Why does the browser download a language model?
The browser's translator needs a small model for each language pair. It downloads it once, the first time you use that pair. After that, translation works without a connection.
Why does it sometimes ask me to click?
The browser lets a page use its language model only after a click, once for each website. The toolbar button, the shortcuts and text selection take care of that. On a site you set to translate automatically, the first visit shows a Start translating button.
Does it translate PDFs or video subtitles?
Yes, with limits. Video subtitles work where the site provides captions, in plain HTML5 video and on YouTube with captions on; Twinread does not listen to audio. The PDF reader works on PDFs that contain text; a scanned PDF that is only pictures has nothing to read, and there is no OCR. Free covers the first 10 minutes of each video and whole PDFs. Images are not translated. See the comparison with Immersive Translate.
Which pages can it not translate?
Pages served over plain http. The browser only turns its translator on for https pages.
How long does a Pro pass last?
A 6-month pass gives six months of subtitles for whole videos and unlimited saved phrases, a year pass twelve months, and Pro forever has no end date. After a 6-month or year pass, Twinread goes back to the free plan. One licence is good for 3 browsers.
Where do I get help?
Write to [email protected].
